Most of the replacement blades on the market stay sharp for a long time, but some modern steels also take a long time to sharpen and often don’t work with traditional oil stones.

Last year, we learned about AEB-L, a Swedish steel designed for use in disposable razors. AEB-L was designed to take a keen edge, have good edge retention, and be highly corrosion-resistant. We thought that these characteristics would also make a good plane blade, so we had some test blades made and the results were excellent!

The Compass Rose Razor’s Edge Plane Blades sharpen quickly and take a very keen edge. You can also sharpen them on any standard sharpening media. In fact, our blades are very similar to popular O1 steel, but with two important differences: our blades hold an edge longer and they’re much more corrosion resistant. If you have a damp shop or if you work with green wood, that extra resistance to rust is a huge advantage.

We even sent our blades out for third-party testing by James Wright. He put them through the same rigorous tests he used for his own famous blade comparison tests. James found that our blades sharpened fast, got very sharp, and held an edge longer than 01 steel.

Our blades measure 0.94" and are slightly thicker than a vintage Stanley iron, so they drop right into most metal planes with no modification. You probably won’t need to widen the mouth on your plane and your original chipbreaker screw should work fine. Our blades are 2” (50mm) wide and will drop straight into No. 4 and No. 5 size planes. (Larger and smaller planes take different size irons.)

The Razor’s Edge blade also comes in a curved version to instantly transform your plane into a scrub or fore plane.

To read more about AEB-L, check out this article.

Made in USA.

*Razor’s Edge Blades are made to fit No 4 and No 5 size planes from manufacturers like Stanley, Millers Falls and Sargent. They should fit any similar metallic plane with a 2” (50mm) blade. These blades are generally not suitable for wooden planes.
