Advanced Shooting Board Kit

Hand tool woodworkers need a shooting board to square up crosscuts, make precise parts, and slice end grain for a clean look. Experienced woodworkers can make a shooting board in an hour, but beginners often struggle to make their first shooting board square and accurate…and that’s the hard part. A shooting board that isn’t square is pretty useless.

At Compass Rose, we know that woodworkers need a helping hand with this critical jig, so we invented the Advanced Shooting Board Kit. Our kit is made from 100% Baltic Birch plywood cut on industrial CNC mills for ultimate precision. 

The weakest point of any shooting board is the fence. This critical part gets chewed up over time and it stops supporting the wood during shooting, leading to splintered corners and loss of accuracy. Our fence slides left-to-right, so you can always nudge it over and trim the end for a clean, gap-free fit between the fence and the plane. It’s like having a brand new shooting board every time you use it.

Most shooting boards won’t hold long pieces and many woodworkers resort to making massive shooting boards that are heavy and difficult to store. Our shooting board features our exclusive stock support, a detachable hook that slides over to fit boards of any length. With our Advanced Shooting Board, you can shoot boards even longer than your workbench with no additional jigs or supports. We’ve also included a robust cleat that hooks over the edge of your bench and a large hang-hole for easy storage. Even if your shop is tiny, our shooting board won’t get in the way.

Our shooting board is compatible with all common metallic hand planes. We generally use a vintage Stanley No. 5, but larger and smaller planes work well too.

We know that many artisans want a shooting board that works with the Veritas™ Shooting Plane and Shooting Board Track, so we’ve made the Advanced Shooting Board compatible with these popular tools. The Shooting Board Track slides right onto our shooting board; you just need to make a tiny adjustment to our fence. You can also use the Veritas™ Shooting Plane on our shooting board without the track. We’ve done it and it works great.

The Advanced Shooting Board is a kit, so you build it. It’s an easy project that only takes a couple of hours. We’ve drilled the holes and cut the joints, so you’re mostly just gluing parts together. The Advanced Shooting Board comes will all the hardware you need, including dowel pins to align parts and a pair of Allen wrenches to tighten the fence-bolts.
