Razor’s Edge Plane Blade (4-5, 2") CURVED

For hand tool woodworking, it’s essential to have a “coarse” plane with a highly cambered (curved) edge. Historically, coarse planes were called “scrub” planes if they’re short and “fore” planes if they’re longer, like a jack plane. Scrub and fore planes allow you to take a heavy cut with minimal tearout. You can waste away material fast and quickly dimension rough stock.

Unfortunately, making that curved iron can be a chore. You really need an electric grinder and new woodworkers can struggle with getting the right radius on the edge.

Compass Rose wants to make it easy for you to get your coarse plane going fast, so we’ve created the first pre-radiused blade on the market. Our Razor’s Edge Curved Blade is ready to drop in to your Stanley No. 4 or No. 5 plane, to instantly create a scrub or fore plane. Our blades come pre-radiused at 10°, an excellent curve for coarse work. The blade edge has been precision-milled to follow that curve, so the bevel is neatly formed and consistent. And our blades come sharp! You can give them a light honing, but they’ll cut right out of the package.

Vintage planes are highly variable, so you might need to move the frog or slightly widen the mouth of your plane to accommodate the radiused edge. This is normal and most coarse planes have a wide mouth to easily pass thicker shavings. Many times, less expensive planes have wider mouths and are perfect for conversion. I have my curved blade in a vintage Victor plane. This bargain model came with a wider mouth and the Razor’s Edge Curved Bade dropped in with no modification.

The Razor’s Edge Curved Blade is made from Swedish AEB-L steel, a corrosion-resistant alloy that sharpens quickly, takes a keen edge and has good edge-retention.

*Razor’s Edge Blades are made to fit No 4 and No 5 size planes from manufacturers like Stanley, Millers Falls and Sargent. They should fit any similar metallic plane with a 2” (50mm) blade. These blades are generally not suitable for wooden planes.
