Laying out dovetails requires a good dovetail gauge and an accurate square. Most woodworking squares aren’t designed for dovetailing, and many woodworkers buy a cheap layout gauge that’s lightweight and uncomfortable.

The Compass Rose Dovetail Square solves these problems by combining a precision try-square with a dual-angle dovetail gauge in a single tool. It allows the artisan to lay out dovetail angles at the most common pitches, carry lines down the faces or edges of boards, and test components for squareness. It’s an all-in-one tool for all your dovetailing needs.

Many dovetail gauges only offer a single pitch, but the Compass Rose Dovetail Square has both 1:5 (softwoods) and 1:8 (hardwoods). Just lay out your dovetail spacing and then register the square on the end of your board to draw in all the angles in one direction. When you get to the edge of the board, flip the square and mark your lines in the opposite direction. (Check out this video for a demonstration.) We’ve built in an extra registration point at the top of the square, so you always have solid contact with the work, even when laying out the tiniest tails and pins.

Our square is made to be wide and short, so it balances on the edges and ends of boards, and it won’t hit your bench or vise during layout. It’s rigid but light, so it’s easy to hold in place while you work.

This tool is also an excellent small try square, accurate to within 0.001”. You can use it to strike lines across the edges of boards, test small components, and even check the quality of your joints. The Dovetail Square is small enough to reach right inside your dovetails and find that little high spot that keeps a joint from coming together.

We spent over a year developing this tool, and we packed it with features. Our square has a comfortable ogee grip, a hang-hole for storage, and the angles are laser-engraved on both sides for convenience. It’s CNC machined from a solid block of 6061 T6 aluminum. The tool is tumbled to remove sharp edges and anodized to prevent corrosion. And it comes packed in a custom-cut foam holder, which can also be used as storage.

The Compass Rose Dovetail Square is a single tool that can replace several cheaper solutions. Buy ours and you can get on with cutting your joints.
